Pizza from our Hearth
Delaware: Thomas McKean was an American lawyer and politician from New Castle, in New Castle County. His pizza includes Ricotta, Parmesan, mozzarella, sausage, Idiazabal cheese, Brussels sprouts, a state staple.
Pennsylvania: Benjamin Franklin, renowned polymath, author, printer, political theorist, politician, freemason, postmaster, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat was one of our Nation’s Founding Fathers and the state’s representative to the Continental Congress. His is the Philly cheesesteak pizza, including provolone, mozzarella, sweet onions, cheese sauce.
New Jersey: Francis Hopkinson. Basil ricotta, housemade mozzarella, and jersey tomatoes give this pizza an authentic Italian feeling.
Georgia: Lyman Hall, Georgia’s governor. This pizza is topped with fried chicken, a state staple, bread & butter pickles, cheddar, and country veloute.
Connecticut: Roger Sherman. Whether you call it a sub, hoagie, hero, or grinder, we can all agree: meatballs, ricotta, San Marzano tomatoes, and roasted peppers make a tasty pizza pie, too.
Massachusetts: John Adams. Evocative of lobster pot pie, we’ve included lobster, celery, carrot, and fine herbs.
Maryland: Samuel Chase. mushrooms, farm egg, idiazabal cheese, and truffle
South Carolina: Thomas Heyward. A low country kind of pizza, with blackened shrimp, pimento cheese, bacon, corn, mozzarella, smoked tomato aioli, with semolina in the crust to represent “grits.”
New Hampshire: Matthew Thornton. bbq hummus, braised short rib, peach goat cheese, and arugula.
Virginia: Thomas Jefferson. Smithfield ham, arugula, lemon, olive oil, oven-roasted tomatoes and fresh mozzarella make up the pie for this instrumental Founding Father.
New York: Lewis Morris was a delegate to the Continental Congress from New York. His pie includes reuben cornbeef, gruyere, 1000 island, and coleslaw.
North Carolina: Joseph Hewes, although originally from Princeton, NJ, moved to Edenton NC at the age of 30 and won over the people of the colony with his charm and honorable businesslike character. His namesake pizza has a vinegar barbecue theme. Braised pork, dijon, smoked mozzarella, smoked mangoes, and North Carolina bbq gastrique.
Rhode Island: William Ellery. shrimp nicoise, white beans, oven dried tomato, tender greens, olives, and eggs.
Each pizza costs $17.76, as we’re sure you remember from History class, correlates with the year the Declaration of Independence was signed, and America gained its freedom!
